Exploring the Dynamics of Emotional Labor and Emotion Management in Nursing Practice
Vol.1(1); Pages:10-17. Published on June 2024
Abstract
Emotional labor, a term first coined by sociologist Arlie Hochschild, refers to the process by which individuals manage their emotions to fulfill the emotional requirements of a job. In the context of nursing, this labor is particularly significant due to the intense emotional interactions involved with patients, families, and other healthcare staff. This paper examines the dual aspects of emotional labor in nursing: surface acting, where emotions displayed are feigned; and deep acting, where emotions are genuinely felt and displayed. We explore the psychological impact of emotional labor on nurses, including emotional exhaustion, job satisfaction, and burnout, and discuss strategies for effective emotion management. By integrating qualitative and quantitative research findings, this study highlights the critical need for healthcare institutions to recognize emotional labor as a core component of nursing practice and to provide support mechanisms that enhance nurses’ emotional well-being.
